The taller of the two existing and disused lighthouses on Spurn Point at the entrance to the River Humber in Yorkshire, England has been awarded a Lottery Grant of nearly $760,000 to refurbish it as a heritage and visitors center to be operated by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

The first record of a beacon at Spurn Point actually dates back to 1427. Often referred to as the Spurn Point High Light, it was reportedly named the Spurn Point Light and also called the Spurn Point New Lighthouse, because the lower light, which was discontinued in 1895, still stands, although its lantern room was removed and replaced by a water tank.

The Spurn Point (new) Lighthouse was converted to semi-automatic operations on January 17, 1957 when it was then maintained by the crew from the nearby lifeboat station who were responsible for maintaining the lighting apparatus and drawing the curtains every day. In 1985 Trinity House, the organization that oversees England’s lighthouses, discontinued the beacon on March 25th of that year.
