During this past winter’s weather, labeled the Polar Vortex by many in the media, a number of photographs of lighthouses frozen over as a result of wave spray and ice were widely circulated on social media sites and newspapers, all of which made a big deal out of it, giving the impression that this is a rare occurrence. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is not unusual for lighthouses, especially those on the Great Lakes.
