Getting supplies to the lighthouse keepers at Wolf Rock Lighthouse was no easy task, as is shown in this original press photo from our archives. The caption read, “A crock of stores being hoisted into the Wolf Rock Lighthouse.” Exactly what was inside of this gigantic barrel may never be known, but it was obviously heavy, and getting it into the tower was no easy task. The photo was taken by a newspaper photographer from the lower outer platform of the lighthouse. It took eight years, from 1862 to 1870, to assemble the 3300 tons of granite that were used to build the 135-foot tall lighthouse that is located in the English Channel, southwest of Land’s End, England. The lighthouse was automated in 1988. Today the only way to access the lighthouse is via a helipad that was built on top of the structure.
