This old original cabinet photo in the archives of Lighthouse Digest was taken by professional photographer Adrian Tuttle of Belfast, Maine and shows a lighthouse keeper in uniform and a man in a suit. No names were written on the back of the photograph. However, under close comparison of a known photo of a Maine lighthouse keeper, we believe, but are not one hundred percent certain, that the keeper in this photo is William Converse Tapley. If anyone has information to the contrary, we’d love to hear from you. Maine lighthouse keeper Tapley served at Saddleback Ledge Lighthouse from 1890-1896, Deer Island Thorofare Lighthouse from 1896 to 1905, and Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse from 1905 to 1929. The other man might have been a relative, perhaps his father.
