Because Machias Seal Island Lighthouse can be seen in the distance from Maine’s Little River Lighthouse, the Friends of Little River Lighthouse are looking for historic images of Machias Seal Island Lighthouse to create a display exhibit at Little River Lighthouse.
In 1832 the Canadian government erected twin lighthouses on Machias Sea Island. They were restored in 1856-57. In 1869 one of the 1832 twin towers was torn down and a new tower was built. In 1878, the other 1832 tower was torn down and another new tower was built. In 1914, the 1869 tower was torn down and replaced by the concrete tower that still stands there today. For a short time, the 1878 tower still stood near the current tower, but it was demolished sometime after that.
