The Oath of Office

Most of us are aware, or should be, with the Oath of Office given to President of the United States, which is similar to the oath given to most other political offices, and to the military. But, you may not be familiar with the oath that was designated by the U.S. Light Board in the 1800s to be given to lighthouse keepers. In the early years the oath was administered by the Chief Clerk of the Office of the Lighthouse Inspector of each lighthouse district.

I, __________________________ keeper of the ___________________ light at _____________________ do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear (or affirm) that I will diligently and faithfully execute all the duties of the said office of the said light to the best of my ability and in strict conformity to the rules, regulations, instructions, and directions which have been or may be prescribed, and in obedience to all laws that have been or may be passed by Congress for the government and management of the United States Light-House Establishment service; and I further solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear (or affirm) that I will support the Constitution of the United States.
