Experts say that Maine’s Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse may need $500,000 in repairs, but fortunately the light is not now in imminent danger.

Built in 1897 out in the water to warn mariners of the ledges by Fort Preble, the lighthouse now sits at the end of a 900-foot breakwater. Last year approximately 3,500 people walked the breakwater and climbed the lighthouse that is now owned and operated by Spring Point Ledge Trust.

Unless a major benefactor comes along, the small nonprofit says that they will never be able to raise that much money.
