The rights of private property owners over public access to Connecticut’s New London Harbor Lighthouse recently escalated with a cease-and-desist order against public tours to the 1801 historic lighthouse.

The battle has now gone to federal court where the New London Maritime Society will argue that even under the previous ownership by the Coast Guard tours were allowed to the lighthouse. In a recent town meeting it was reported in The Day newspaper that “Maritime Society Director Susan Tamlevich was in tears as she spoke about the missed opportunities caused by the ongoing disputes and said she was baffled by the opposition to opening up the lighthouse to school groups and visitors, at no charge.”
