Under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, ownership of the stately Stratford Shoal Lighthouse in Long Island has been transferred to the Korstad Marine Preservation Society.
The granite structure that was established back in 1877 is also known as the Middle Ground Lighthouse, perhaps because it is located midway between Long Island, New York and Connecticut. Government records indicate that the lighthouse is officially in New York water but some maps and records indicate that it is in Connecticut water.
Regardless, this magnificent old lighthouse will finally get the tender loving care and restoration that it has needed since the 1970s, especially now that it is under the watchful eye of Nick Korstad, president of Korstad Marine Preservation Society. Nick owns the Borden Flats Lighthouse in Fall River Massachusetts, which he exquisitely restored and made available for overnight rentals.
