Back in the mid-1970s, a couple of years after Alaska’s Eldred Rock Lighthouse had been automated, Paul Christian, while being stationed on a Coast Guard cutter, visited the lighthouse for some general maintenance. Inside the lighthouse he found this drawing that was lying on the floor of the abandoned structure. He thought it was pretty neat and kept it.

Historic image of the 1905 Eldred Rock ...

The drawing shows a young Coast Guardsman and a depiction of Eldred Rock Lighthouse and the words,

“Welcome to

Eldred Rock

Bar and Grill

Island Paradise”

The drawing was signed by J.L. Garrick SN, and dated May 1969. Garrick was probably a young Coast Guardsman who was stationed at Eldred Rock Lighthouse at that time.

It would be wonderful to locate the artist who drew this sketch. Perhaps one of our readers will help us contact the former Coastie who drew this unique and humorous image, which is now a slice of lighthouse history.
