British Columbia, Canada’s Sheringham Point Lighthouse has received a $550,000 donation from Peter Westway, a resident of Ontario, Canada. To date, it is the largest private donation ever made to a Canadian lighthouse.

Peter Westway had previously made a $1,000 donation toward the restoration of the 1912 lighthouse that sits on the south coast of Vancouver Island. The current donation was given through the Westway Charitable Foundation, which was founded by Peter Westway and his sister, Lynn, in 1986 and is dedicated to the arts, medical research, and heritage ventures.

Peter Westway is no stranger to lighthouse preservation. He and his wife own the Old Cut Lighthouse on Lake Erie that the couple restored in 2000, a restoration project that has won a couple of renovation awards.

When the Sheringham Point Lighthouse was automated in 1989, the grounds around the lighthouse were closed to the public. In 2003, the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society was formed to raise money to save and restore the lighthouse.

The $550,000 multi-year donation, some of which must be matched, cannot be used to maintain a park at the site or for management of the society. Repairs this year will include on-site refabricating of the badly corroded metal structure, replacing broken windows with specially manufactured ones, restoration of the engine room, concrete repairs, and installing solar power for electricity to the site.
