The Coquille River Lighthouse Centennial announced the winners in its recent photo contest. The winner was Bill Mullins of Myrtle Point, Oregon.

The old Lighthouse Depot in St. Joseph, Michigan continues to draw controversy. The new owners want to turn it into a brew/pub, but some local residents are opposing it. The fact that the new owners want to preserve the historic building is commendable, but as is with most things now days, someone or somebody will find fault with the plan.

Dolly Bicknell, daughter of Edward Rowe Snow, has taken an active role with the Project Bug Light (Duxbury Pier Light, MA). Her father, as many of you know wrote many books on New England including Famous New England Lighthouses and was the flying Santa of the Lighthouses for 27 years.

The old life saving station and former Coast Guard Station in Monmouth Beach, New Jersey is the location a group of scuba divers want to establish a museum. The museum would house artifacts of shipwrecks that the divers recover. The group, New Jersey Historic Divers, would like to have the museum open for business by September 1997.

The Coast Guard has announced that it will leave Maryland's Sharps Island Lighthouse as is and it will not be demolished. This is after numerous letters were received requesting that the historic beacon be saved. The lighthouse, which was featured on the cover of our March 1996 issue, tilts at a 20 degree angle.

Showing how lighthouses have been popular over the years we recently came across an advertisement for Buick Automobiles that featured a lighthouse. The ad ran in the October 1920 issue of National Geographic.

Barnegat Light in New Jersey is as popular as ever. It is currently featured on New Jersey's specialized lighthouse license plate and has even been featured on a milk carton, not to mention the Federal Duck Stamp. One new place is the label of Jersey Shore Gold an ale bottled by Hunterdon Brewing Company.

An eight foot replica of Cape Florida Lighthouse has been donated to the Key Biscayne Elementary School by the Key Biscayne Chamber of Commerce as part of the July 27th relighting ceremonies at Cape Florida Lighthouse. The lighthouse replica was made through the efforts of the Villagers a local historical preservation group.

Zachary, a 7 year old Wisconsin boy suffering from leukemia got his final wish fulfilled. He and his family visited Cape Lookout Light and North Carolina's seashore. The trip was planned by the group that makes wishes come true for terminally ill children. Zachary passed away several weeks ago.

The U.S. Coast Guard has authorized construction of a pair of 225 foot Juniper class buoy tenders at a cost of approximately $50 million. The ships will be named Elm and Walnut to commemorate a pair of early lighthouse tenders. The primary mission of the new tenders will be to service navigation aids however they will also be used for search and rescue, law enforcement and ice breaking duties.

The North Light Commission on Block Island, Rhode Island will benefit from the sales of a poster called North Lighthouse created by artist Sheri Mathieu. Funds will be used for the restoration of the lighthouse. The 18" x 24" poster is printed on Vintage Velvet Art Paper and sells for $30.00 plus $4.95 for shipping. Massachusetts, Nauset Light is 43 feet from the cliff. What happens if one major storm hits the area, "Forget it - it's over, it goes down," said Pam Nobili of the Nauset Light Preservation group. The lighthouse is scheduled to be moved this October. Lets hope no major storms hit Cape Cod before then.

The Lighthouse Preservation Society of Rockport, MA is moving its offices to Newburyport, MA. Jay Hyland, President of the organization has stated that they eventually plan to open a lighthouse museum in the town.

On Saturday June 15, Marinette Marine Corp. of Marinette, WI launched the second of the U.S. Coast Guards new class of buoy tenders, The Willow.

Views of Pigeon Point Lighthouse are available in packets of four cards from the math department at California's Half Moon Bay High School. Three of the cards are shot when dense fog bathed the lighthouse and cottage in an eerie glow and the fourth is a timed exposed portrait shot on a clear night in which spokes of light accent the blips of stars. The project is a fund raiser for the math department to purchase new high tech calculators. The 1996 Christmas replica from Harbour Lights will be of Vermont's Colchester Reef Lighthouse and will retail for around $75.00. This piece will be produced on a very limited edition and if you want one you should place your order early. Speaking of Harbour Lights . . At the recent Collectors Jubilee, held in Tulsa, OK, Harbour Lights was the recipient of the prestigious, "1996 Collectors Choice Award" for Best Unlighted House.
