The National Park Service is repairing the corroded metal, repointing the tower’s peak, replacing the current ventilation system and performing numerous other projects.

The first Highland Lighthouse tower was a wooden structure built in 1797 and was replaced in 1831 by a brick tower, which in turn was replaced in 1857 by the current structure. In 1996, the lighthouse was moved 450 feet back from the eroding shoreline.
