Fort Washington Lighthouse as it appeared on ...

The United States Coast Guard has removed the light and triangle day­mark from the endangered 1901 Fort Washington Lighthouse that sits on the banks of the Potomac River on the grounds of Maryland’s historic Fort Washington.

Ownership of the lighthouse was transferred to the National Park Service in 2005 and the tower was restored in 2009. But, without proper maintenance since then, the wooden tower has rapidly deteriorated.

Reportedly, the National Park Service had the money in their 2020 budget to save the lighthouse, but the project was pushed forward to 2021. Because of all the rotting wood, it was thought that the lighthouse might not survive the winter of 2020, but it did. Now, the question remains; will it survive the winter of 2021?
