U.S. Representative Jack Bergman recently took a trip out to Michigan’s endangered Huron Island Lighthouse to better understand what he can do to help save the 1800s light station.

Bergman made the trip with members of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and personnel from the Seney National Wildlife Refuge and others. Sara Siekierski, the refuge manager, said that the most pressing concern is the boathouse at the dock because stranded boaters might seek shelter there and the structure is unsafe.

Congressman Bergman is probably right when he said that funding to save the lighthouse station will have to come from a combination of public and private partnerships. It is believed that this is the first time that a federal Congressmen has set foot on the island. Time will tell if his visit will help save the light station.
