The National Park Service (NPS) has scheduled the demolition of the circa 1925 lighthouse keeper’s garage at Nauset Lighthouse in Eastham, Massachusetts.
The 1928 garage was used by the Nauset Light Preservation Society in the 1990s while they raised funds to have the 48-foot-tall lighthouse moved 336 feet away from the eroding cliff, a project that was completed in 1996.
Because erosion is threatening the road east of the light and garage, thereby cutting off access to homes north of the light, the town of Eastham cut a new access road. The NPS probably wants to get rid the old garage before the road disappears.
It was suggested that the Nauset Light Preservation Society dismantle the garage and reassemble it with the rest of the light station, but its Board of Directors apparently expressed little interest.
