For all practical purposes, ever since the lighthouse was automated in the early 1920s it has been allowed to deteriorate with almost no real maintenance. By 1994, a Coast Guard report indicated that no money should be spent trying to maintain the tower that was becoming a serious safety hazard to personnel. However, even then, it took another sixteen years before the Coast Guard removed the 4th order lens from the tower to save it and put it in storage.
