Thieves have stolen the historic lens that belongs in the lantern of England’s 1874 Hartland Point Lighthouse.
The two-tier third order, sextuple-flashing, rotating, catadioptric, optic designed and built by Chance Brothers, was stolen from storage where it was awaiting restoration after having been removed from the lantern.
A $6,800 reward was offered by Crimestoppers for information that would be given to them exclusively that would lead to the return of the stolen lens and the conviction of those responsible.
Hartland Point Lighthouse was automated in 1984, and shortly thereafter, its keepers’ dwellings were demolished to make room for a helipad, which was necessitated because of the precarious nature of the access road that was subject to frequent rock falls and landslides.
