George Martin Wible (1885-1925), who served as a lighthouse keeper at Virginia’s Tangier Sound Lighthouse, was honored this past May 14 with the placement of a United States Lighthouse Service Memorial Marker at his gravesite in Crisfield, Maryland by the Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society.
George Wible started his lighthouse career in 1914 as an assistant keeper at the Point No Point Lighthouse at the entrance to the Potomac River near Dameron, Maryland, where he served until 1917 when he was transferred to the Tangier Sound Lighthouse. Shortly after his arrival at the Tangier station he was promoted to the position of head keeper, a job he held until his death in 1925.
