A work crew from the Northern Lighthouse Board recently made needed repairs to the 1874 Chicken Rock Lighthouse. The 144-foot-tall tower is located just south of Calf of Man in the Isle of Man, which is a self-governing British Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland.
On December 23, 1961 a fire heavily damaged the interior of the tower and the three lighthouse keepers, one of whom suffered burns, had to be rescued by crew of a Royal National Lifeboat Institution vessel. Although the lighthouse was repaired following the fire, it decided that keepers would no longer occupy the site, and the lighthouse was automated. (Photo by A.B. Graham)
