Members of various State Historic Preservation Offices from around the country recently gathered in Maine for one of their two annual, “meetings in the field.” Their Maine hosts took them on a tour to look at Federally related issues that naturally included lighthouses where attendees were able to see the different approaches that were taken by the United States Coast Guard to save historic properties. Earle Shettleworth, Director of the Maine Historic Preservation Office said that lighthouses are unique properties for restoration, “The issues are different at each property.” Representatives of the United States Coast Guard also attended the conference as observers to learn and to answer any questions about lighthouse preservation that arose.
