Horace G. Holloway, a Civil War veteran, who later became keeper of the Horse Island Lighthouse, was the officer in charge of the military detachment that participated in the unveiling of the Statue of Freedom atop the dome of the Nation’s Capitol. The statue, designed by Thomas Crawford, is also referred to as Goddess of Liberty.
