In 1998 the United States government turned over Egg Rock Lighthouse to the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service and it is now part of the Maine Coastal Wildlife Refuge. The lighthouse is one of the most viewed lighthouses in Maine from the many tour boats, gigantic cruise ships, nature tour and whale watching vessels that traverse the waters near the lighthouse. It is also visible from Ocean Drive, the main scenic road in Acadia National Park.

The volunteer project was truly a community effort as many others joined in to help. Gary Fagan, owner of Acadian Nature Tours provided the lunch for the work crews, John Nicolia, owner of Lulu Lobster had been lining up volunteers all summer, Bar Harbor Whale Watch donated the use of its lobster boat, the Miss Samantha, Baker Island skiff and the crew to ferry the volunteers ashore during the work day. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service provided the materials used for the spruce up project, which was funded through recent federal stimulus funds. All those who made this possible are to be congratulated for helping to make a difference.
